The announcements from Apple’s WWDC just keep coming. Alongside revealing iOS 11, watchOS 4, and the debut HomePod smart speaker, Apple has unveiled two new versions of its iPad Pro: an all-new 10.5-inch model, and an update to its 12.9-inch device.
First up, the brand-spanking-new 10.5-inch iPad Pro. If you’re looking for improved screen real estate – without the bulk of an over-sized tablet – this is the iPad for you: you’ll get 40% narrower side bezels, enough room for a full-size keyboard, and a total weight of less than 500 grams.
iPad updates: what you'll get in both models
Both the 10.5-inch and new 12.9-inch models include a powerful new 64-bit A10X Fusion chip, for a performance that leaves most current PC laptops in the dust. You’ll get a six-core CPU and twelve-core GPU, meaning CPU and graphics performance are, respectively, up to 30% and 40% faster than the previous A9X chip.
Each new iPad Pro also features a redesigned Retina display, with anti-reflective coating, TrueTone for automatic white balance adjustment, and a wider colour gamut. The new Retina display also includes ProMotion: Apple’s new tech that promises more fluid scrolling, greater responsiveness (and lower latency when used with the Apple Pencil), and an all-round improved display.
The 12.9-inch and 10.5-inch iPads include the same high-end front and rear cameras as Apple’s flagship iPhone 7, with a 12-megapixel rear shooter with Optical Image Stabilisation and – for all your selfie needs – a 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera in front.
You’ll also get ‘all-day’ battery life of around 10 hours, plus four-speaker audio, and support for travel in more than 180 countries thanks to the embedded AppleSIM and LTE Advanced3. iPad Pro is compatible with Apple’s Pencil and Smart Keyboard, giving users tools for both handwritten notes and drawing, or take-anywhere typing.
What's new for iPad in iOS 11
We’ve covered much of what’s new in iOS 11 here, but the update to Apple’s iconic operating system means iPad owners can enjoy improved multitasking, personalisation, and productivity.
iOS 11 brings a new customisable Dock to the iPad Pro, giving users quick access to apps and documents from any screen. You’ll get a redesigned app switcher, plus an all-new Files app for easy document storage and organisation, both on your device itself or externally through iCloud Drive, Dropbox, etc.
Need to move text, photos or files from one app to another? Multi-Touch Drag and Drop makes it easy to drag important info across apps and screens. Notes features an all-new document scanner with powerful image filters, while deeper Apple Pencil integration means inline drawing and Instant Markup are available in apps including Mail and Notes.
And if you need quick access to your Notes, simply tap Apple Pencil on your display to open the app directly from the Lock Screen.
