For many in Australia, Bigpond is the word we used for the internet since the beginning of the internet: so where has it gone?
Launched back in 1996, Bigpond was the name given to Telstra's internet services, and in time, it was also the badge for a number of online services, including Bigpond Music, Bigpond Games and Bigpond Movies.
For many years, 'Bigpond' was synonymous with the internet in Australia, with Telstra owning the lion's share of broadband market share in this country. Many of us, or people we knew, used Bigpond on a daily basis.
This also meant that an enormous number of people used bigpond.com email addresses, something customers had bundled as part of their internet subscriptions.
But since 2013, Telstra has been re-branding its internet services. Starting by renaming Bigpond Broadband to just Telstra Broadband. The Bigpond website changed to Telstra Media, while Bigpond Music and Bigpond Games went the way of the Dodo. In fact, only Bigpond Movies remains.
But I want Bigpond!
If you're keen on signing up to a Telstra internet service, you still can of course. The names may have changed, and the plans have evolved, but it is still essentially the same service.
If you need an ADSL connection at home, here is a sample of Telstra internet plans what may fit the bill:
If your home has been connected to the NBN, these are several compatible Telstra plans:
What about my old Bigpond account?
If it's been a while since you logged into your account on the Telstra website, you'll need to look for the Telstra Personal Account login page.
And my old bigpond.com email address?
Bigpond webmail was also rebranded, so you're now looking for Telstra Mail.
