How much will I pay for the NBN?

If you're ready to take the plunge and connect to the NBN, you may be concerned about potential costs. The good news is, for the most part, there's not a huge amount of variation between providers, and an NBN connection will cost you about the same each month as an equivalent ADSL plan.

NBN plans are priced according to maximum speeds available, plus monthly gigabyte allowance and any bundled-in options (such as phone calls). You may also pay slightly more for avoiding contracts through a month-to-month plan, but this varies between providers.

Here's a quick overview of what you can expect to pay for most plans based on speeds, plus any setup costs and extra charges you may encounter.

Unlimited plans by speed

While companies such as Dodo, Spintel and Aussie Broadband all offer starter plans of under 50GB per month, most users will require more data than this. If you want unlimited data, you're looking at a starting price of between $40 and $60 per month on a basic speed plan of 12Mbps.

12Mbps

Most entry-level NBN users will pay around $50 per month for unlimited data with a basic 12Mbps connection. If you want to go no-contract, you can sign on for a month-by-month offer with most of the below providers.

Deal alert: Amaysim's current promo deal gets you unlimited data at 12Mbps for your first six months, for $40 per month on a no-contract plan. You'll need to sign up before August 31, 2017 to qualify, and after your first six months prices revert to $60 per month.

Spintel, Bendigo Bank Telco, Dodo and TPG also all offer 25Mbps unlimited plans under $70 per month.

100Mbps

If you want the best of the best in terms of download and upload speeds, you'll need to pay extra. 100Mbps NBN plans are the priciest, but the best option if you're part of a big family or multi-user household with a love of streaming and downloading.

Generally, you're looking at a base price of $85-$90 per month for unlimited 100Mbps data, with or without a contract. Lower priced options begin with Dodo's $89.90 Unlimited Max plan (including pay-as-you-go calls), alongside the $90 NBN 100 plan from Amaysim, and Exetel's $89.99 Unlimited Superfast plan.

If you want all the available bells and whistles, you'll pay at least $100 per month with providers such as Optus (who throws in its Yes TV by Fetch set top box), Belong, or iiNet. Prices can go up to $129.90 per month (on iPrimus' Intense 100/40 Unlimited Plan, with all available calling options included).

Deal alert: if you sign up to MyRepublic before August 31, you can get unlimited 100Mbps service for just $59.99 per month on a 12-month contract. The offer is available to customers in selected areas only, and includes PAYG calls.

Limited data options

Don't want unlimited data? You can sign on for plans as low as 10GB per month (with Dodo) up to 4000GB (with Telstra, who doesn't offer unlimited NBN plans). However, depending on which telco you go with, you may find unlimited data is as-good or better in terms of pricing. Tiered data plans begin with the options below.

Setup and other costs

Fortunately, standard NBN equipment installation is free of charge to residential customers. But depending on your choice of provider and plan, and if you've opted for a contract or a month-by-month deal, you may be required to pay a fee for initial setup costs.

This fee could be as (relatively) low as under $50, or $200-plus: for example, Optus charges $200 upfront to no-contract users, while iPrimus' setup fee is between $143.95 and $173.95.

You may also need to pay for a WiFi modem, although this is again frequently waived or reduced if you sign on for a 12, 18 or 24-month contract. Modems and gateways are usually priced in the realm of $50 - $150 upfront, depending on your choice of provider and product.

Keep in mind that even if you do pay upfront for a modem, this fee may be considered a 'rental' cost, and you may be required to return it if you cancel your NBN plan. Of course, you're free to bring your own unlocked modem to your NBN service, but it must be compatible with the technology used to service your home.
