Connecting to the internet should be easy, but with the numerous internet providers, and hundreds of plans to choose from, it can be tricky to spot a good deal

Well, you're in the right place. The WhistleOut team spends loads of time sifting through the current offers and knows what is hot, and what is not. Read on for our picks for the internet plans available right now.

Best for unlimited data

Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram: the list of data hogging apps is growing all the time. If you're like us and spend a chunk of each day on your phone using any of these services, then you need a plan with a fair bit of data.

The telcos clearly know this and now it’s not uncommon to see plans with 10GB or more. But, make sure you take a look at a few recent bills to see how much data you need so you can be sure you're choosing the right plan.

WhistleOut's Pick — ADSL

Broadband Plans

SpinTel
SpinTel
  • Urban Home Bundle Unlimited ADSL2+
  • Unlimited ADSL2+
  • $54.95/mth
  • Min. cost $54.95

Spintel is your cheapest path to unlimited data with an ADSL2+ connection, especially with it's current promotion that waives all setup costs. Most providers charge around $200 for a new connection, but Spintel will hook you up for free.

The Spintel plan also includes the necessary phone line rental bundled into the price, making the $54.95 price tag all the more impressive.

The plan doesn't include any home phone calls, so if you need a landline, we'd suggest you take a look at the optional call packs, which start at an extra $10 for calls to Australian landlines.

amaysim
amaysim
  • Basic Speed - Unlimited Data
  • Unlimited NBN Fixed Line
  • $40/mth
  • Min. cost $40

For a limited time, all new Amaysim NBN customers get the NBN 12 and the NBN 25 plans at discounted price for the first six months, which will obviously save you some money. With 'Special Pricing' offer and no lock-in contract, is a great way to try the Amaysim service before you commit to it long term.

All Amaysim NBN plans have no setup costs, but require you to have your own NBN-ready modem. If you don't have one, Amaysim can sell this to you for $109.

Best & cheapest

Some of us just need a good, basic internet conection at a low cost. We don't need the bells and whistles, like TV boxes and unlimited data. Just something to get online for web browsing, email and a bit of social media.

SpinTel
SpinTel
  • Urban Home Bundle Unlimited ADSL2+
  • Unlimited ADSL2+
  • $54.95/mth
  • Min. cost $54.95

So, we said above, that our best and cheapest plan may not include unlimited data, but this plan with Spintel is too good to pass up, we think. You could save $5 per month and choose a Spintel plan with 500GB per month, but the extra money is well spent on the peace of mind you get with unlimited data.

Just be aware that the $55 price is only available in metro areas. For areas outside of this, the price will increase depending on the equipment that Spintel has access to in your area.

Flip TV
Flip TV
  • NBN Unlimited Value
  • Unlimited NBN Fixed Line
  • $49/mth
  • Min. cost $108

FlipTV is one of the newer internet providers offering the NBN, and this plan is great value. For $49.50 per month, you get Unlimited data. Moreover, they deliver English, Bosnian, Croatian, German, Greek, Macedonian, Polish, Portuguese, Serbian, South American and Spanish television connecting these communities to their culture back home, fast and effectively.

The plan is also no contract, so if you don't like the FlipTV service you can move to a different provider without much fuss.

Best fast NBN 100 plan

One of the key promises of the NBN is a faster internet connection than we've had previously with older ADSL technology. In fact, at its fastest, the NBN can reach speeds of 100Mbps, which is fast enough to download an full HD movie from iTunes in about 5 mins. Even a decent ADSl connection would take about an hour to download the same movie.

If you're after these super fast speeds, look no further. Here are our picks for the best NBN 100 plans.

It's hard to past the NBN 100 plans from My Republic, which basically offers a single NBN plan, with unlimited data and the fastest speeds.

This plan is on a 12 month contract, but you can opt for a no contract option for an extra $10 per month. All plans include an NBN-ready WiFi modem.

Best TV bundle

The relationship between watching TV and the internet continues to converge, so it makes sense that you would want to bundle the two things into a single monthly bill.

When it comes to TV options, there is just a few options to consider:

  • Foxtel: broadcast pay TV with a number of channel packs, and a variety of prices.
  • Yes TV (Optus Fetch TV): a combination of a set-top box for free-to-air TV, and apps like Netflix and YouTube.
  • Telstra TV: a small, internet-connected box used for streaming internet TV to your flat screen TV.

Optus
Optus
  • 80 Plan
  • Unlimited ADSL2+
  • $80/mth
  • Min. cost $1,920

Your choice of TV service will depend on what you like to watch, but we tend to think that Optus plans with Yes TV offers a decent mix of broadcast and streaming options that should suit most people.

But keep in mind that while Yes TV gives you easy access to services like Netflix and Stan, you will need to pay for a subscription to these services separately before you can use them.

Also, if you love watching sport, Foxtel is still your best bet. You can bundle a Foxtel service with broadband plans from Telstra, Optus and Foxtel.

Best Mobile Broadband

Sometimes you do need, or can't connect to, a fixed line internet service, so mobile broadband might be your best option. Mobile broadband uses the same networks and towers as mobile phone plans, so if you have a working phone, there's a good chance that you can make use of a mobile internet service.

This section is for plans designed to replace your internet at home. If you're after a data SIM to use in an iPad or portable modem, skip ahead to the next section.

vividwireless
vividwireless
  • Unlimited Data Plan
  • Unlimited Mobile Broadband
  • $90/mth
  • Min. cost $289

The vividwireless Home Wireless Broadband product is a unique option that can replace a fixed-line service for couples or small families. You get a modem similar the sort of modem you'd use for ADSL or the NBN, which has a decent WiFi range suitable for small to medium sized house.

Running on Optus' 4G Plus network, Vivid's unlimited plan is priced at $90 per month, and is available to eligible homes in selected major cities.

For a limited time, vividwireless is running a second month free promotion for new customers. Sign up, and you can get your second month of service free of charge - you'll receive a refund for your payment via bill credit.

Best Data SIM

A data SIM is a great idea if you have a portable device, like a tablet, and you want to stay connected when you're away from home. If you don't have a SIM card slot in your tablet, or you'd like to connect something else, you can use a portable 4G WiFi modem. Some plans include a modem, while others will require you to bring your own.

Jeenee Mobile
Jeenee Mobile
  • $25 Data SIM Plan
  • 10GB Mobile Broadband
  • $25/mth
  • Min. cost $35

There are a couple of cheaper options, but Jeenee Mobile's 25GB plan is the best value in our opinion. As a rule, the more you spend, the better the data-per-dollar ratio will be, so it is important that you have an idea of how much data you need for your iPad each month.
